January was my month to head south for a visit with CMHA staff at "The POST" in Medicine Hat.
With a large assortment of clothing, toys, furniture, collectibles, books and household items, The POST is Medicine Hat’s premiere second hand store. Operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Alberta Southeast Region, The POST relies on a mix of paid staff and volunteers. It also provides a supported work environment for many individuals who are experiencing mental health issues.
The Post relies heavily on approximately 80 volunteers who work tirelessly preparing donated items for customers. Sharon H. Executive Director of CMHA Southeast Region shared, "All items received are donated out of the generosity of our community. At the Post all of our volunteers and staff join together in support of the CMHA and its programs. Proceeds generated at The POST remain in the community and are used to fund CMHA programs and services"
Store Manager, Jason T is quick to point out that the POST plays a key role in the community. Individuals can receive a warm welcome, find some great deals and enjoy time spent with the POST's incredible staff. Stigma around mental health has no place in this shop. Volunteers, staff and customers participate within the POST's culture of acceptance, support and wellness.
